Does "Think Globally, Act Locally" mean the same thing today as it did 40 years ago when the slogan’s dissemination was limited to tee-shirts and bumper stickers?
In other words, in the electronic age, “What's Local”? And why does it matter?
The places we call “home” embody the character of the place and the culture that creates them. But, in an increasingly globalized world, there is warranted concern about the homogeneity of our environment. Every place you go increasingly looks like every place you’ve been and our sense of “home” and “place” is changing. What implications does that have for us physically, emotionally and spiritually?
Mr. Parker will make a case for the importance of maintaining the unique qualities of “place” and “home” in an increasingly place-less world while at the same time, embracing the gifts of globalization.
Traditionally, buildings, towns and cities have been for, of, and about the place and the culture within which they are built. Understanding the relationship between our climate, region, settlement, neighborhood, house and our favorite place to curl up with a book is to understand “home”. This concentric nesting or “matryoschka” of places is a fundamental underpinning of long-term sustainability and our sense of safety and security. When we lose what is "local" we lose more than just history, we lose what is "home" to us.
B. Aaron Parker will talk about the distinction between things that are inherently, intrinsically and stubbornly local and those things that are not. He will address the nature and value of those stubbornly local things in terms of our built environment and talk about what makes them of value to us in our daily lives and as a durable legacy.
